i raised and released a female possum one year and she brought back her babies to show me the next year. Stood at my feet looking up just as she had done as a youngster. Very touching.

I went into rehabbing knowing I would have to let go and allow my "babies" to live wild. There is always the possibility that something will happen to an animal I release, but the same is true for any of us. I figure it is better that they live while they can as God intended them to live.....living free to be a possum!

The same is said for the squirrels I release. I really worry that a hawk will get them and every time I pass a dead squirrel in the road in our neighborhood, I wonder if it was one of my babies.

We aren't meant to spend our lives in fear and worry. Find a great place near a lake or pond, as far from roads as you can, out in a wooded area and let your guys go to experience the world! Pat yourself on the back for a job well done and consider getting another group to "mother" for a while. Next time, consider letting them go a bit earlier when they are between 1 1/2 to 2 pounds. The more you do this, it does get a bit easier. :-)
