Bird Feeders
You may choose to supplement your wildlife's natural diet with various types of birdseed and other critter feeds. If you use bird feeders, keep them clean by periodically soaking and scrubbing them in a dilute bleach solution.
Follow up:
Keep in mind that by feeding birds, you are also attracting other animals. It's not fair to attract them and then mistreat them, if you are using squirrel-proofing devices or repellents, please make sure they are safe and humane.
The best way to keep squirrels away from bird feeders is to provide them with another food source. Corn, sweet feed, sunflower seeds, and peanuts are all used for this purpose, but too much of any single type of food will create nutritional deficiencies and other health problems for any animal. Your best bet may be to just host as many natural food-bearing plants as possible in your wildlife habitat.
Additionally, rather than throwing away fresh fruits and raw vegetables that are reaching the end of their shelf life, consider tossing them into your wildlife area for an additional source of fresh foods for the wildlife that wonder by your yard.
