A Rainbow of Squirrels
As I was intaking an opossum this evening from a wildlife removal company, the young man shared a squirrel trapping story with me. He had a customer who was trapping squirrels out of his yard and releasing them down the road from his house into a wooded area. He had trapped a total of 30 when he decided the squirrels were coming back and he was trapping the same ones over again. He decided to paint the squirrels different colors after trapping them so he would know which ones returned. Of course, none had returned. Can't you just imagine that rainbow of squirrels running loose in the forest!

In Texas... we have a pretty big problem with squirrels and had to have a family removed from our attic....they decided to make home in the attic... well anyway..... we were told they had to take the squirrels over 100 miles away or they could find their way back to "home" is that true?

Most squirrels, especially the fox and gray squirrels, have a home range of between 1.5-8 acres. As these are considered "prey" animals, they will instinctively need to start building nests as soon as they are released. Most squirrels will have 2-3 nests that they use at any one time. Gray squirrels are territorial so a newly released squirrel may need to search for a tree that isn't already occupied. They do not have any "homing" instincts like pidgeons and will not try to return miles to get home. As long as you release the squirrels more than 10 acres from where they were trapped, your neighbor shouldn't have a problem with them returning.
It would be a good idea to squirrel proof the attic so they don't have other squirrels move in, too.
